Stuart Hicks, DVM

I’m just an old man that’s been practicing vet medicine for 40 years. I grew up on the Edgecombe side of Rocky Mount in a large family. It was always a zoo at our house. We had chickens, pigeons, reptiles, 3 dogs, 2 horses, a cat and a sheep. Having 3 brothers we used to get into mischievous trouble involving BB guns and fire crackers.

Out of high school, I went to ECU for 1 year then went to Marion Military Institute in Alabama until I transferred to Auburn University. I eventually graduated from Auburn Vet School, got married, and started working.

I’ve been happily married since 1976 and have a son that I work with daily. I work often and don’t have too much free time so my hobbies are limited. But I enjoy deep sea fishing, Auburn football, our beach house, Mexican food, cutting grass, and spending time with friends and family. After retirement I plan to grow my hair out, get an emerald earring in my left ear, and see more sunrises in Atlantic Beach.

Michael Hicks, DVM

Hey, I’m Michael Hicks. And yes my dad is Stuart Hicks. I grew up here and like all Hicks’s cleaned dog and cat poop as a kid. I remember dad waking me up at 2-3 in the morning before school to go on horse calls. As a kid I always wanted to be either an astronaut, a cowboy, or a vet. I’m not too good at physics and we didn’t have horses growing up, so here I am. After high school, I got a couple of degrees from Auburn prior to vet school. I attended vet school at St. George’s University in Grenada and did my clinical year at the University of Tennessee.

Like a lot of recent grads, I was jobless at first. I eventually took a job at a very large multi-doctor practice in Johnson City, TN. After about 9 months of getting comfortable with my new job, I met a girl that I couldn’t live without. My wife’s name is Jessica and she is my world. We have 3 cats, Kino, Wheezy, and Ashoka, and a happy Mountain Cur mutt dog named Sage. I’ve been working with my dad and his great support team since January of 2016. I have an adventurous adrenaline streak and love mountain biking, scuba diving, sailing, and snowboarding.

Dr. Michele Dick, DVM

Hi, I am Michele. I graduated in May 2018 from the college of veterinary medicine at NC State. Prior to veterinary school, I received my undergraduate degree in biology in 2014 at UNC Charlotte. I am currently working on receiving my certification in veterinary acupuncture as well.

I was born and raised in the Carolinas, initially in Sumter / Eastover SC before moving to my dad’s hometown in Albemarle, NC for high school. I grew up on a hobby farm for most of my childhood where I took care of cats, dogs, free range guinea pigs, rabbits, chickens, pheasants, turkeys, goats, horses, and mules. I’ve raised a few flocks of mallard ducks, and I used to have a pet rooster that would ride on the handle bars of my bike.

I met my boyfriend, Macey, almost 8 years ago, and I couldn’t have gotten through all of my schooling without him. We have two sweet dogs, Nova and Izzie. I enjoy spending my free time with my dogs, friends, and family. I also like traveling, watching TV, eating good food, yoga, hiking, kayaking, and gardening.

Hicks Animal Clinic Vet Tech

Niki Washington
Registered Veterinary Technician

I am a 23-year old animal lover from Raleigh, North Carolina with a passion for veterinary medicine.  I graduated from Miller-Motte College in 2015 after completing a 2 1/2 year and became a Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) after passing my states/nationals, so here I am!  I started working at Hicks in February 2017 after my boyfriend and I moved out to Wilson, NC to get away from the bustle of city life.  I have 2 feline babies named Jacko and Garth - they are 4 years old and my whole world.  I would like to go back to school at some point to study animal psychology and behavior and expand my knowledge in the world of animal medicine.  I love my job, my patients, and of course their human parents!

Veterinary Assistant and Receptionist

I have been a part of the Hicks Animal Clinic family for almost 13 years now. I was born and raised most of my younger life in Charleston, SC. We moved to Rocky Mount,  NC in my teenage years. Growing up I was not able to have any pet, my older sibling was highly allergic. I was that kid that wanted to tend to every creature. From the smallest insect to anything with four legs and fur.

I went to high school at Rocky Mount Senior High. When I finally got on my own I started surrounding myself with animals.

I have a precious kitty named Abel and I am very partial to him, I love cats! I also have two very sweet pit bulls, and three very funny donkeys.

When I am not helping animals one of my favorite things to do is hit the gym. Lifting heavy weights and getting my heart pumping is a good time to me.

I can’t forget about my two sons and my amazing husband, hanging with them is always fun! We live on a big farm so outdoor activities like hunting, fishing, and 4-wheel riding is what we do for fun.

Veterinary Assistant

I started my journey working with animals in 2015 as a receptionist and discovered that I had a real compassion for the health and welfare of all animals. I enjoyed interacting with pets and their owners so much, that I went to Nash Community Collage for the Vet Assistant Program. Upon graduating I started my rewarding career with Hicks Animal Clinic in February 2017. I originally come from the Adirondack region of upstate New York, where I fostered animals at an early age. I and my beloved horse Easy Majestic rode to victory as the New York State Saddle Horse Champions for 1988, an accomplishment of which I am very proud of. I moved to North Carolina in 2006 where I live with my wonderful husband, Tennessee Walking horses, a yellow lab and 2 crazy cats. I enjoy trail riding on horseback, cooking, reading, gardening and quiet time in the barn.

Sonnie Wheeler
Veterinary Assistant

Hey, I'm Sonnie! I was born and raised in Nashville, North Carolina. I graduated from Nash Central High School in 2014 with all honors. After high school I moved to Fayetteville and attended Methodist University where I originally planned on becoming a nurse and studied biology for two years. Upon my junior year my heart led me to work with animals rather than people. My passion for helping and caring for animals was far greater than I had realized. Therefore, I moved back home and attended Nash Community College where I have received my Associate in Science and Art and a Veterinary Assistant Certification. I plan on continuing my education and going back to school to become a Veterinary Technican. I have gained an immeasurable amount of experience since working at Hicks, and I have become a part of a great team and family of clients.

Growing up in Nash County my whole life has also included growing up on a farm and with animals. At my house we have always had dogs, cats, horses, and all other farm animals. I love to ride my horses and go on riding trips with my mom on the weekends. I have also spent a lot of time working at horse barns such as A Chance In The Country. All of these animals in my life have pushed me towards this job I have now at HicksAnimal Clinic. I love all of the experience and advice everyone here at Hicks is giving me. After graduation from Northern Nash High School I plan to continue my path towards an animal science based field.
