Our externships offer supervised, in-practice experience in small animal general practice. Placements range from two to four weeks based on student needs, with two weeks being the most common duration.
Clinical experience
- Gather patient histories
- Perform physical examinations under supervision
- Assist with drop-off workups
- Develop diagnostic and therapeutic plans
- Help manage medical cases
Practical skills
- Scrub in and assist with surgical procedures
- Participate in wellness and preventive care
- Strengthen client communication
- Refine technical skills
- Complete appropriate medical records (SOAPs)
Program requirements
- Currently enrolled in an accredited DVM program
- Authorized to work in the United States
- Enthusiastic, engaged participation
- Professional conduct and respect for practice policies
Clinical activities take place under veterinary supervision and within the permitted scope of student duties. Students are encouraged to review the North Carolina Veterinary Practice Act and follow the clinic's guidance and office policies.

Yes. We accept applications from client service representatives, veterinary assistants, and registered veterinary technicians. Role availability may vary; submitting an application does not guarantee an opening.
Who can apply for an externship?
Students must be enrolled in an accredited DVM program and authorized to work in the United States. We look for engaged students who are ready to learn, participate, and uphold professional standards.
