Veterinary Student Externship Program at Hicks Animal Clinic:

Investing in the Next Generation of Veterinarians

At Hicks Animal Clinic, we are proud to support the future of veterinary medicine through our Veterinary Student Externship Program. This program is designed to provide meaningful hands-on, in-practice experience that helps students build confidence and hit the ground running after graduation.

Program Structure

Our externships are flexible, ranging from two to four weeks based on student needs, with two weeks being the most common duration. The program is structured to allow students, under direct veterinary supervision, to develop problem-solving, technical, and communication skills within a small animal general practice setting.

Externs work closely with our veterinary team and are encouraged to participate in all aspects of patient care to gain a well-rounded clinical experience.

What You’ll Be Doing

Externs at Hicks Animal Clinic will experience a typical small animal general practice caseload. Under veterinary supervision, students will have opportunities to:

  • Gather patient histories

  • Perform physical examinations

  • Assist with drop-off workups

  • Develop diagnostic and therapeutic plans

  • Scrub in and assist with surgical procedures

  • Help manage medical cases

  • Provide wellness and preventative care

  • Strengthen client communication skills

  • Refine technical skills

  • Complete appropriate medical records (SOAPs)

Who We’re Looking For

We seek enthusiastic, engaged veterinary students who are eager to learn and actively participate in patient care while upholding the professional and ethical standards of our practice. Students are encouraged to review the North Carolina Veterinary Practice Act (90-187.6) regarding the scope of duties permitted during externships.

Externs are expected to conduct themselves professionally and meet the same standards expected of all Hicks Animal Clinic team members, as outlined in our general office policies.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in an accredited DVM program

  • Authorized to work in the United States

Whether you choose to complete an externship with us or pursue another opportunity, we wish you continued success in your veterinary education and career. Thank you for your interest in Hicks Animal Clinic—we look forward to supporting your journey in veterinary medicine.
